IS theories, are they emerged in IS disciplines or adopted from other Article
IS speculations, are they developed in IS teaches or received from different orders - Article Example The field of Information System is subject to information and data concerning a world comprised of physical frameworks, structured ancient rarities and human conduct (Gregory and Dennis, 2005, p.3). In any case, it is basic to guarantee that solitary pertinent information is hypothesized, and in a coordinated way. Thoughts might be recovered from different controls; anyway this must be finished with a point of concentrating on the idea of data framework and its uniqueness. A hypothesis, as per Merriam-Webster (2004), can be supposed to be a theory that is created for an examination. An order, then again, might be alluded to as a part of learning or organization. This, notwithstanding, doesn't imply that the controls are limited to just their regions of study. This notion consequently implies that Information Systems is ordinarily ââ¬Å"singleâ⬠. This, be that as it may, isn't the situation as Information System is viewed as ââ¬Å"pluralisticâ⬠field. This is on the ground s that it draws its information from other, unique and increasingly trustworthy orders. Some type of control ought to be set up in each field to stay away from situations where thereââ¬â¢s no endless supply of educating, practice or examination. Such a case would bring about incongruity and, low status for the order. A parity ought to be built up to maintain a strategic distance from all out control or general incongruity of the order. Checking Information System Applications in IT are currently upsetting the manner by which firms lead their day by day tasks. The advancement made in PC innovations has to day prompted the ascent of various territories of utilization. This has, along these lines, added to an expansion in the job of IS while extending its extension. This makes ICT advances present in various and different territories, for example, governments, wellbeing division, and so forth. As indicated by Avison and Fitzgerald (2003, p. xi), data frameworks are ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ the powerful plan, conveyance, use and effect of data innovation in the associations and societyâ⬠. This definition addresses one of the noteworthy parts of IS, that is the formation of IT applications. It additionally recognizes the way that a more extensive consideration instead of just innovation applies in ICT applications. IS discipline has moved from it innovation focused concentration to different zones that incorporate administration, innovation, social and association. Data System isn't completely about innovation nor is it an administration field like put by Webster and Watson (2002). Data frame work is recognizable from these orders because of the consolidation of relics in machine-human frameworks. As indicated by Lee: ââ¬Å"Research in the data frameworks field inspects something beyond the innovative framework, or simply the social framework, or even the two one next to the other; moreover, it examines the wonders that rise when the two interact.â⬠(2001, p. iii) This, accordingly, demonstrates data framework is the control that joins the information on people with that of physical articles. Bacchae Essay Research Paper In the Bacchae
Bacchae Essay, Research Paper In the Bacchae, for whom do you experience more compassion? Pentheus or Dionysus? In the Bacchae, Pentheus and Dionysus have extremely various characters. They are both extremely intricate characters and the two of them experience changes that adjust the way you see them. Toward the start of the dramatization, we are given an extremely emotional picture of Dionysus at his female guardians, Semele? s dedication. He is have oning a Crown of Hedera helix, shipping a thyrse and have oning a dun covering. It is an extremely obscure and frequenting scene. At the point when Dionysus talks he talks furiously and enthusiastically # 8211 ; you do non obtain the inclination that he is a truly quieted character. Conversely, all things considered, when you first run into Pentheus you consider him to be an extremely pleased grown-up male. He is shocked with the grown-up females of Thebes, he has a thorough feeling of his ain convictions? he only can non comprehend why the grown-up females are taking to have faith in an outside God, an? upstart God? . He is naturally questioning. He accepts that the grown-up females of Troies have left? on some demand of Bacchic love? . He is so pessimistic he truly can non have confidence in the intensity of Bacchus. At the point when we preeminent meet the two opponents face to face, we from the outset feel understanding for Dionysus, for he is the hostage. Pentheus begins the discussion thought he has the upper manus since he has more control over the situation. In any case, it is clear to the crowd that Dionysus is in charge of the situation. He is unagitated and solid. He could hold felt compromised, being in a male ruler? s nearness, yet then again he acts unquestionably. This could hold made me experience glad for Dionysus for dealing with the situation so great ; on the off chance that it was non for the way that he savagely taunts Pentheus. Pentheus clearly has no idea that he is addressing a God, and Dionysus takes full bit of leeway of this. Dionysus drops insinuations that he is non only a Bacchic admirer, however these are simply evident to the crowd. Dionysus discloses to us that Dionysus is? close at manus and sees what? s being done to me? . The crowd can value the unpretentiously in this, yet to Pentheus the grown-up male is just exciting him. I feel that Pentheus is avaricious of Dionysus? control over grown-up females, long loops and white covering. This would explain why he is so curve to Dionysus. Pentheus does non want to accept that Dionysus is genuinely the kid of Zeus. I feel that where it counts he realizes that he is and that is the reason he constantly needs to console himself of his illustrious position. I think Dionysus is aware of Pentheus? green-peered toward beast and he utilizes this to further his ain potential benefit. We realize that he can make things happen individuals, as he can do the watchman experience blameworthy for just passing on him before the male ruler. I can feel for Pentheus in light of the fact that it is hard for him to comprehend this new, outside religion, permit totally acknowledge it. He is a youthful and similarly new male ruler and new to his capacity, without holding it doubted by an outsider. He needs to asseverate his capacity and to be in charge. He can non make this while being undermined by an eastern religion. I do deviate, in any case, with the way Pentheus endeavors to arrange Thebes # 8211 ; it ought to be up to the individuals of Thebes to do up their ain heads with respect to their convictions. In the event that they need to accept that Dionysus is the kid of Zeus, there is nil Pentheus can make to adjust their heads. Pentheus is scared by the way that the grown-up females are so sure of themselves, he does non like the way they are out of nowhere at effortlessness with nature. What he does non acknowledge is that Dionysus does non want the grown-up females to completely forsake themselves to nature, however simply to perceive his significance and the significance of his love. There are numerous characteristics that make Dionysus a solid God, he is extremely shrewd and causes the individuals to cover their desolation by making sure about vino. He is other than a prophesier and can empower individuals t Operating system see their from now on. Dionysus is as often as possible accused for his female followings being unchaste and without moral thought processes. I do non accept this is an only accusal, as he does non do them move corrupt. In the event that they do, so they are as of now corrupt and would hold been so even of they had remained at place with their families. Teiresias clarifies when he says ? Dionysus will non oblige grown-up females to be virtuous, since in all undertakings abstemiousness lives in our ain natures? . Dionysus is other than thought to hold been the ground the grown-up females of Thebes go beasts and loot the close by modest communities when confronted with any obstruction or power. I do non accept that this has anything to make with the confidence, for when the melody, the genuine Drunken revelers, are confronted with power they then again lie prostrate on the floor naming for their God to convey them. What I do non hold with however, is the way Dionysus turns everybody frantic. It is non the individuals of Thebes? botch that Agau? , Ino and Autonoe accepted that a human fathered Dionysus. It is extremely out of line of Dionysus to punish the entire city. I other than do non hold with the way that he rebuffs Cadmus. The grown-up male has done nil off base, he trusted in Bacchus and followed his rituals. He needs to come to footings with the killing of his grandson, by his ain young lady. It is non just to other than shun him from his place. Cadmus even supplications to Dionysus, expressing him that? Incomparable creatures ought to non resemble people in vindictiveness? . His requests are disregarded. There are other than justification for non feeling for Pentheus. He in a flash Judgess Dionysus to be a womanly mat and ridicules him for this. He other than Judgess the grown-up females of Thebes and the Maenads unreasonably quickly. He is xenophobic, racialist and intertwined. While these are non honorable highlights in an individual, they can be pardoned in light of the fact that Pentheus is only an individual. Dionysus does non hold that vindication. Be that as it may, Pentheus can in some cases simply be blamed for being uncouth. He makes an absurd assessment in locking Dionysus up. He has obtrusively disregarded the watchmen? also, Dionysus? admonitions, about the marvels that Dionysus can execute. In the third scene when Dionysus is runing Pentheus, Pentheus is have oning Bacchanal clothing, much as a casualty of relinquish would hold. This is a cardinal scene in the dramatization. It is here that I can plainly observe that the elements of Dionysus and Pentheus have been turned around. Presently it is Dionysus in charge of Pentheus? arrant embarrassment. I feel unmistakably more compassion toward Pentheus than Dionysus in light of the fact that Pentheus is non perceptive that he is under charm or being derided. In any event, when it was Dionysus being pursued, he was ever aware of what he was making. Pentheus would neer hold mortified himself by dressing in grown-up females? s clothes and moving vain, in the event that he had been of rational head. At the point when it in the end goes to the perish of Pentheus, I feel no warmth for Dionysus at all. He has unfeelingly tricked Pentheus to his perish and has sent Agaue distraught and unfit to express that she is killing her ain kid. Whatever understanding I had one time felt for Dionysus? character is presently gone. He has acted in such a cool, remorseless mode to everybody around him. He has driven each one who did non accept that he was the kid of Zeus frantic, each piece great as some who did. He has acted in a vindictive and malignant mode non fitting for a God. He is the kid of Zeus, yet he acts like an angry individual. Pentheus, however he has made some terrible conclusions, is strongly the character I feel more compassion toward. Nearly all the way through the dramatization, he is non discerning of what is go oning around him, or on the other hand the way he is being utilized. It is somewhat disgraceful to see the way he attempts to thankfulness on to his capacity and mental soundness. He tricks himself all through the dramatization that he is the 1 in control, the 1 with the approval.

Design and Technology Project The artefact
Question: Describe about the Design and Technology Project for The artefact. Answer: Introduction As part of Assignment 1 under Design and Technology Project, we have to Design, make and appraise an artefact which could be used as a teaching aid. The artefact must be made up of at least two recycled items and should have a moving part. Following are the details of artefact work done for Assignment: Teaching Aid : Artefact on 'Rotation of Earth' Subject Area : Science Educational Concept covered : What causes day and Night? Age Group : 6-10 years Brainstorming Ideas As part of building an artefact, an initial exercise was done to decide on the model theme. For this, different ideas and thoughts were brainstormed and jotted down. Some of the ideas included: Subject Area: Mathematics Snake and Ladder: Idea was to build a snake and ladder on a cardboard with numbers 1-100 on it. This will have included a dice as well which will have numbers 1 till 6. So as the players play the game they can basically earn number sequence, increasing and decreasing numbers etc. Subject Area: Science Wind Vane: Idea was to build a wind vane which can indicate wind direction. It basically consists of asymmetrical shaped object with its centre of gravity about a vertical axis. As the wind blows the vane rotates around vertical axis to settle in the direction of wind. This would have covered concept of how wind blows from one shore to other and concept of force to change objects position. Rotation of Earth: this is the artefact that is chosen as part of assignment and will be detailed in subsequent sections. Deciding on project In the above section, different ideas were penned. Now each idea/though was nailed down to understand that it meets assignment objective and feasibility top the best possible extent. Snake and Ladder: This was rejected because there was no moving part in this artefact. The only thing is that dice will be rolled turn by turn by players which may not meet objective: Artefact should have a moving part. Wind Vane: Although this has a moving part, but it did not cover much from the education concept perspective. Secondly this theme did not had much human interaction for the moving part (as wind will force object position change). Considering these two pints this idea was rejected. Rotation of Earth: This was one of the idea that was finalised and finally adopted for this exercise. This theme fairly covers the 2 drawback highlighted in above ideas. As we will see in subsequent section it has a moving part, covers good educational concept and has substantial human interaction while use so as to invoke thinking and understanding the concept. Hence this theme was finalised and taken forward for further work as described below. Stages of construction Concept: The sun rises and sets daily every day. We see the sun rise in the east. At noon it is at its highest position in the sky; and there after descends and disappears in the west. (ThePetRockFamily, 2011) The Earth is always moving around the sun. As the Earth rotates, the sun seems to disappear and reappear, forming day and night. Every twenty four hours the Earth makes one complete turn. The sun shines on Earth as it spins. But, the sunlight falls only on half of the Earth, facing the sun. The part of the Earth that receives light has the day, while the other part has night. (Crash Course Kids, 2015) Earths axis passes through the North Pole and the South Pole. An axis is an imaginary line drawn between the North and the South Poles. Each complete turn off Earth on its axis is called Rotation (LittleOrisek1, 2011). It takes twenty four hours to complete one Rotation or one day. The Earths Rotation is daily responsible for the daily episodes of day and night (Matt Williams, 2016). It also causes rising and falling of tides in the seas and the oceans. The direction of Earth's rotation is counter clockwise (when looking from above the North Pole) Because Earth rotates counter clockwise, it appears the Sun rises in the East and sets in the West How does Earths rotation cause day and night? The earth rotates once in 24 hours (Kidport, 2012) The earth rotation is responsible for daily cycles of day and night (Mandy Barrow, 2013) At any one moment in time, one half of the earth is in sunlight while the other 1/2 is in dark. As the earth rotates, we get day and night. (Douglas Bennett, 2000-2001) The edge divining the daylight from night is called the circle of illumination. (NASA, 2000) The above phenomenon is represented diagrammatically as below: Material Required for Artefact: Four wooden sticks of different length (1 piece: 18 cm, 2 piece: 6 cm, 1 piece: 12 cm) Two small wooden bars (6 cm x 1.5 cm x 1.5 cm) One flat Cardboard (20 cm x 7.5 cm) One rolling rod One used platic ball (approx size of golf ball) One battery operated small bulb system Bolts to assemble the above components (approx 18 in numbers) Recycled products used: Flat Cardboard (taken out from a packaging of electronic equipment) Used plastic ball (old ball not in use any more) Rolling rod (bicycle spoke) Assembly: 1) Cardboard is used as a base and using drill to make holes attach the two small wooden bars to base (refer picture 1a and picture 1b in powerpoint) 2) Now separately, using the bicycle spoke bend it shape as below (refer picture 2 in power point) 3) Now as ball represents earth in our case, we will use above rod as axis. So we will do holes on 2 ends diametrically apart. After this we will put rod in the ball holes. (Refer picture 3a and picture 3b in powerpoint). After this separate the ball and rod, as we will be using them in later steps 4) Now using the three wooden sticks of different length (1 piece: 18 cm, 2 piece: 6 cm) prepare a stack. This will hold the earth (Refer picture 4 in powerpoint) 5) Now assemble the rod, ball and stack so that rod, ball fits in the middle part of stack. (Refer picture 5 in powerpoint) 6) Now add component made in step#5 to cardboard base made in step#1 (refer picture 6 in powerpoint) 7) Separately attach battery operated small bulb system to remaining one wooden stick (of length 12 cm; refer picture 7 in powerpoint). 8) Now add the components made in part#6 and part #7 so as to form the model.( refer picture 8 in powerpoint) Conclusion Finally the artefact is ready (as shown in picture below). Through the artefact we can understand the concept of day and night, visualise its occurrence, how it happens, why it happens, what frequency it happens. References ThePetRockFamily. (01 Mar , 2011). Sociology and Durkheim Essay
Sociology and Durkheim Essay Sociology and Durkheim Essay Color of Fear It has been expressed through the views of Marxism that human societies move forward through tension and class struggle. Marx argued that land owners would exploit their workers in order to keep an ongoing cycle of labor. The land owners would limit those allowed to work for them which in turn would create a hostile environment and a need to survive. Those without work would have to find other means to survive for instance through crime or charity in order to keep themselves and their families alive. The tension for survival would rise between both classes and eventually cause a revolution consisting of the landowner versus the laborer or worker, this concept was also known as a shift from Feudalism to Capitalism (Roberts). It was by the theories of Marxism that a history of relations would always be set between the exploiter class (landowners) and the exploited class (the workers). Most of what Marx argues about has been going on since the day exploitation was ever cre ated. These unfortunate events are still seen throughout our world and we can honestly say that it may never be erased from this earth ever. Through my own eyes I have seen this battle countless of times, it has always been my people versus the landowners. Growing up as a kid I would always come home from school to see my grandmother so tired from working under the hot summer sun in the planting fields and greenhouses off the I5 in the city of Encinitas. The beliefs of Marx can be described through the life of many minorities working in the same conditions as my grandmother used to. The owners of the fields would exploit their workers with threats and the use of the fearful word, Immigration. One could not say a word for it was these hard working conditions that kept a scarce meal on the table to be able to stay alive. The landowners would offer work and the laborers would keep quit about the working conditions and the ongoing circle of classes would keep going. Capitalism plays a k ey role in what Marx believed, he has stated that through Capitalism one can not be and individual with their labor and creating something that comes from the mind and hands of ones self. This idea can also be seen with the migrant workers of today, many of us as I did when I was very young, thought that migrants liked working in these fields and conditions but the reality is just the opposite. The workers place themselves in these harsh working conditions not because they enjoy it but because it is the only way to be able to survive and keep some sort of income coming in. Armed with his Enlightenment ideology, Durkheim made the point that sociology would study the social life using scientific methods (Roberts). Through his work he created a phenomena known as social facts: ââ¬Å"manners of acting, thinking, and feeling external to the individual, which are vested with coercive power by virtue of which they exercise control over him (sic).â⬠what Durkheim meant by his stateme nt was that humans have a certain way of thinking, feeling and acting. These types of feelings and actions had said, by Durkheim, to be seen even way before we are even born and after we die these emotions and feelings keep on living on after as well (Roberts). We use these emotions that Durkheim described, but it is stated in his work that it is not until after we learn these concepts through socialization into an already existing culture (Roberts). Durkheim also had many other theories that branched out form what I have previously stated some of his other work used the notion of feelings, emotions and norms of life to answer the question of why society stays together and not cause chaos and anarchy. This theory that Durkheim had was known, by him, as mechanical solidarity. His work states that this form of solidarity had developed way before its time and seen through people of tribes and villages (Roberts). According to Durkheim what keeps society together was similarity. Similar values in

Lit short paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Lit short paper - Essay Example He goes on further to say that he loves not only the Supreme but also the infinitely small ââ¬â the thimble, spurs, plates and flower vases. The Supreme would point to god and that adoration comes naturally to creatures of God (which would include the poem himself). The enumeration of the above objects point to a consideration of their usefulness. The reader is given an inkling next of the poet as being a man who smokes. He starts the stanza by saying ââ¬Å"For heavenââ¬â¢s sake, the planet is beautifulâ⬠as though to imply that it goes without saying that the world we live in is not only beautiful but filled with things like ââ¬Å"smoking pipes cupped in the handâ⬠which are sources of enjoyment for men (and also for women). This rather long stanza goes on to mention other things not only useful to man but handmade by man ââ¬â keys, salt cellars. This is followed by a description of the intricacies that make up the things stated ââ¬â the curve of the shoe, the weave, the smokiness of chairs. He does not stop here. He continues enumerating other things that man needs to make life easy and clean and comfortable ââ¬â spectacles, nail, brooms, clocks, compasses and coins. In the next stanza which is shorter, he marvels at the multitude of pure things has made of wool, wood, glass, rope, tables, ships and stairs. Then the poet waxes sentimental when he remembers feathers, loveââ¬â¢s blossoms vanished ââ¬â glasses, knives, scissors that bear ââ¬Å"finger marks of a distant handâ⬠. It seems that the poet associates these things within easy reach with someone elseââ¬â¢s hand ââ¬â probable that of the loved one who is no longer around. He writes of them as ââ¬Å"lost in the most forgotten oblivionâ⬠. How strange that he banishes them to oblivion and yet remembers them. Is he applying reverse psychology here? Sadly, he looks for objects he loves but does not own in houses, streets, elevators

Analyzing mills saying Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Analyzing mills saying - Essay Example From the aforementioned statement, the English philosopher suggests that happiness or satisfaction is not the ultimate objective of performing an action or making a decision. This means that he does not quite agree to the principle of utility because he maintains that there would be a difference in the kinds of such individual. Meaning, a thing might be good, acceptable and brings happiness to someone but not to another. For the first person may be happy however, when someone looks deeper into what the former is satisfied about, it could be because that personââ¬â¢s standards are way below what his humanity demands of him. For example, one may find pleasure in sex but another finds it displeasing because the person acts immorally. That certain person acts like an animal which simply satisfies his wants. For Mill, he is likened to a pig. It is known that a pig does nothing but eat, sleep and relieves itself from the heat by swimming in the mud or worse, in its own dirt and it is sa tisfied with such kind of life. Therefore, the philosopher argues that he would rather be an unhappy human being than an animal which acts in such a manner but is still satisfied about itself. For the second person, he might be dissatisfied and unhappy but considers himself of higher morality than the former. This contradicts the philosophy of Bentham who says that a person is moral when his actions bring him happiness. Similarly, Mill believes that it is better to be a dissatisfied wise man than a satisfied fool. It is assumed that he argues that when a wise man is unhappy or dissatisfied about his actions or decisions, it is not only because he has done unacceptable things. Rather, the unhappiness and dissatisfaction might be the result of unmet high standard one has set for himself to achieve. In the same way, one cannot say that a person who is satisfied and happy with

The effect of day care on their children Essay Example for Free
The effect of day care on their children Essay I would generally agree with the view that parental characteristics highly affect how the environment of their childs day care would be; indeed this will influence the social learning of the child. If a decision was made for the child to attend day care regularly, this obviously would be made by one, or both, of the primary caregivers/ parents. Therefore, it is their choice into which establishment their child will attend to. This extremely depends on the characteristics and lifestyles of the family unit, thus affecting the childs wellbeing in day care. The environment in which the child is raised in vastly affects how they view, and are viewed, later on in life. As a result, choosing the right day care for the earlier years in life would be beneficial for the parents, and especially the child. Since each family has a different wealth status, this has an effect on which major decisions are made in life. A family in which are highly wealthy would choose a higher status day care, while in comparison a family which is less than middle class would choose a poorer quality day care. Even if both the higher and poorer quality day care supports children while primary caregivers are away, the day cares differ in individual quality. Higher standards of day care obtain high health and safety requirements, responsive and warm interactions between children and staff, developmentally appropriate curriculum and adequate staff training. While poor quality care puts childrens development at risk: theyre likely to obtain lower language and cognitive scores, and lag on social development. Different quality day cares are chosen by parents who are correlated with different circumstances. For instance, single working mothers or low incomes are more likely to experience low quality care. Yet, according to the views of Scarr (1998), we cannot be sure whether its the quality of day care or the parental characteristics which influence childrens development. However, it is the parental characteristics which affect the quality of day care. If a family is sinking in debts, they could not afford an elite day care which has a high price. By choosing a high priced day care, this would consequently lower the familys wealth, since they already have balance which is due. As a result, this will have an effect on the child, as the child will notice stress occurring in the family. Therefore, higher quality day cares are not an option. In comparison, higher class families will choose the best day care for their offspring, since they have the money and time, for this approach. What I mean by time is that, they get involved in the childs day care, such as PTA, fundraising and volunteering. This would not be present in lower class families, as they are much more preoccupied with work, rather than spending more time with their child, which they keep in day care. In conclusion, I would agree parental characteristics highly affect the quality of a childs day care, and the childs life itself. Since it has been stated that childs attachment will highly affect how they will be attached later on in life, day care also inspires and implies this. Day care provides further attachments to be formed; therefore a childs social life would have more security and stability. Thus, choosing the wrong day care provides less of this comfort, and less of a childs desirability to learn efficiently.

Essay on Eating Disorder - Think About Thin :: Argumentative Persuasive Topics
Think About Thin "From now on you'll eat what I tell you to .... this is the last time you'll refuse to eat. From now on..." ...Be pretty, but beauty is only skin deep. ...Be sexy, but not sexually active. ...Be happy, but please others, first and foremost. ...Be thin, but stay healthy. ...Be thin. ...Be thin. It sunk in. We received the message. Like everything else, it sunk in. It sunk in with magazine covers and standards and scales and diets. It sunk into the minds of seventy percent of the young women between the ages of 14 and 24 and how many can wiggle free from it? Maybe you were someone who thought the "Am I fat?" question and answer period was unique to you? Unless I have my facts wrong, if we don't eat, we die. Even with that common knowledge, there are still people who don't eat. Those people will die. It is the reality of an eating disorder. Blame the media or the culture or the "distorted society' in which we live. It's the models. It's the parents. It's the kid who called you obese when you were five. We all wonder who is leading the revolution that is wasting people away. Let us worry more for the ones who follow. The question should not be why anorexia and bulimia start, but why they don't stop. Anorexia and bulimia are the biological diseases that mirror the "distortion of a natural human response to famine." Psychologists, social scientists, historians, and physicians seek to explain the contemporary causes of eating disorders. We have statistics and case studies. We focus on the root of the problem. We examine whether the instinct to control has gone awry or the problem of low self-esteem has made a permanent mark. Jonathan Swift and Piers Paul Read Essay
Cannibalism is the last taboo. In ââ¬ËAliveââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËA Modest Proposalââ¬â¢ Jonathan Swift and Piers Paul Read approach the subject with completely different purposes in mind. What do you consider to be the purpose of each author, and say how he achieves this? A Modest Proposal is a scathing attack on the economic oppression of the Irish by the English. During Swiftââ¬â¢s lifetime tremendous suffering was caused by English practices in Ireland. However, it is incorrect to say that cannibalism is the theme of ââ¬ËA Modest Proposal. ââ¬Ë Swift was a Protestant writer in Ireland at the time of The Great Potato Famine. The article is a clever satirical device to draw attention to the plight of the poor. He infiltrates the opposition, the rich Protestant landlords, in order to put their torturous ideas to ridicule. Swift attacks his own Protestant, English community by creating a narrator who considers himself a reasonable and compassionate character, but one who combines a repulsive anti-Catholic bigotry, with a ââ¬Ëmodestââ¬â¢ proposal, that is, rather, a ââ¬Ëfinal solutionââ¬â¢: he, the narrator, advocates cannibalism as a means of countering Irish Catholic poverty abortion, and the high birth rate. The narrator, in a frighteningly rational and level-headed tone condemns the English for being inhumane, the Irish for being passive, the speaker for being morally blind, and the reader for accepting intolerable situations in the world around him; for this piece was accepted and believed by many, at the time. On the other hand, Piers Paul Read, in his biographical ââ¬Ënovelââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËAlive, rather than indirectly giving answers to a problem, asks questions. He tells of the experiences of the survivors of an Andean plane crash in 1976, who, in the remoteness, and the harshness of their environment, the lack of a consumable source of food, and the quickening exhaustion of their own limited amounts of chocolate and wine, have no where to turn except, in their desperation, to eat the meat from their fellow, dead, company. They have only their planeââ¬â¢s wreckage as shelter, which has come down from 14,000 feet. Both literary pieces, although their purpose, style and audience are different, jolt the reader out of their complacency, and encourage them to think of things they thought werenââ¬â¢t necessary to be thought about! However, it is necessary to understand that the two texts have been written hundreds of years apart, and society, of course, has evolved. Swift has reached out across the religious and ethnic divide to champion the ignorant, impoverished Irish Catholics. The bigotry of Swiftââ¬â¢s narrative is so convincing and grotesque, that Swift himself is sometimes mistaken as his narrator, an anti-Catholic bigot! On the contrary, Swiftââ¬â¢s essay harshly attacks the ââ¬ËChristianââ¬â¢ commitment of Irelandââ¬â¢s wealthy Protestant absentee landowners, and his unflattering ââ¬Ëcannibalââ¬â¢ is made in their image. P. P. Read meanwhile, attacks not the opposition, but gives a balanced and meaningful account of the plane crash and the tales that followed, and examines the human spirit to stay alive, and questions what is ââ¬Ëcivilizedââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëhuman. ââ¬Ë Yet, simultaneously, Read, almost in the opposite of Swift, advocates cannibalism. Read turns the views of cannibalism as a taboo on its head. Rather than associating it with savagery and being primitive and irrational, he questions logic, and seems to state that the ban is the primitive thing, that is not based on reason. In one paragraph alone, he writes, ââ¬Å"we grappled with emotions,â⬠and ââ¬Å"we did not think it wrongâ⬠twice. While Swift attacks the Landlords by linking their greed to their ââ¬Å"devouringâ⬠of the Irish Catholics, and satirizes cannibalism to the extent that it is no longer seen as ironic, only distasteful, Read, using a character ââ¬ËCanessaââ¬â¢, reasons cannibalism out. He talks of nourishment and energy, and of course, eventually wins his company. Their decision is based on logic and reason, and the ability to use these makes us civilized. Although I do not feel that Swiftââ¬â¢s narratorââ¬â¢s views are plausible, Read using a variety of effective techniques, convinces the reader. Swift shows how the English projected their own blame onto their victims- destitute Irish Catholics, that, Swift suggests, have been ââ¬Ëcannibalizedââ¬â¢ by the rapacious greed of absentee landlords. Swift is hoping to shame them into being more compassionate.
