Breaking Out and Stepping Up Essay -- Literary Analysis, I just Wanna

In the stories, I Just Wanna To Be Average, by mike Rose and The Achievement of Desire, by Richard Rodrigez, a timeline of their educational progress is exposed. Both are the offspring of minimally enlightened immigrant parents. Whos families settled into the working-class of California. Without having their parents as scholastic role models, Rose and Rodriguez had to find their own way through the education systems. Despite the lack of supportive social conditions, both Rodriguez and Rose were stimulate to surpass the status quo expectations environmentally bestowed upon them. Mike Rose, who wrote I Just Wanna Be Average, started his schooling with a bleak future. His lower class immigrant parents hoped that sending their son to Our wench Mercy would put him on the track to success and surpass all of his family members level of education. Rose shares, No one in the family had departed to college only two of my uncles had completed high school (166). Unfortunately, Rose ended u p in the vocational program. A program that groomed students, not for college, precisely to better assimilate into the working-class. The vocational track is one that does not pave the way for a bright future. Its graduating class is comprised of underachievers who lack motivation and have no desire to get ahead. The same could be said about Mercys staff. Rose paints a picture of his educators by mentioning, Civics was taken over by a football coach who had trouble reading the textbook aloud --and reading aloud was the centerpiece for his pedagogy (163). Surrounded by stubbornly turbid students, and less then enthusiastic teachers Mike Rose seemed to not have a demote. Much like Rose did not have the support of an educated role model within his school pr... ... shaped him, Rodriguez explains, Without extraordinary determination and the great assistance of others --at home and at school -- there is little chance for success (197). Being able to take the lack of support from hi s family and be grateful for the roll it played in his personal quest for knowledge is something to be admired. Although coming from different backgrounds, Mike Rose and Richard Rodriguez share a similar passion and lust for knowledge. They both used inspirations and determination to break out of a mold their family history created. Even though their means to academic success differed, the character gained from their individual experiences allowed for a change. Luckily both of these stories have a smart ending. One where both the average joe and the scholarship boy can overcome preconceived expectations and become who they want to become.

Juvenile Crime :: essays research papers

Remember doing something mischievous or wrong when you were a kid and getting the label "delinquent" slapped on you ? Did you ever wonder what it meant ? That is what my topic for immediately is . . . insubstantial delinquency. In this report I will define novel delinquency, give the extent of juvenile delinquency, give some suggestions on what causes juvenile delinquency, and what is universe done in various communities to deal with this growing problem. The legal term juvenile delinquent was established so that young lawbreakers could avoid the disgrace of organism classified in legal records as criminals. Juvenile delinquency laws were designed to provide treatment, rather than punishment, for juvenile offenders. Young delinquents usually are sent to juvenile courts, where the main aim is to rehabilitate offenders, rather than to punish them. But the term juvenile delinquency itself has come to imply disgrace in todays society. A churl can be labeled a delinquent for breaking any one of a number of laws, ranging from robbery to running away from home. But an pull through for which a youth may be declared a delinquent in one community may not be against the law in an other community. In some communities, the police ignore many children who are accused of minor delinquencies or refer them directly to their parents. But in other communities, the police may refer such children to a juvenile court, where they may officially be declared delinquents. Crime statistics, though they are often broken and may be misleading, do give an indication of the extent of the delinquency problem. The FBI reports that during the early 1980s, almost two-fifths of all arrests in the United States for burglary and arson were of persons under the ripen of 18. Juveniles also accounted for about one-third of all arrests for larceny. During any year, about 4 % of all children between the ages of 10 and 18 appear in a juvenile court. The percentage of youngsters in this group who are sent to court at least once is much higher. A third or more of those boys sustainment in the slum areas of large cities may appear in a juvenile court at least once. Girls are becoming increasingly knotted in juvenile delinquency. Today, about one of every five youngsters appearing in juvenile court is a girl. In the early 1900s, this ratio was about 1 girl to every 50 or 60 boys.

How Does Steinbeck Present Curly’s Wife

Of mice and men is one of Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbecks most poignant. trim in the 1930s during the Great Depression it features two farm workers called George ad Lenny. The travel around together in search of work sharing a dream of a place of their own- a small ranch where they can live and work for themselves. It tells the story of how violence may erupt to destroy those dreams. Curleys wife- as she is known to the audience- is the scarcely women on the ranch. With prohibited the identity of a name she is known only by association of the man she doesnt even like. condescension her marriage to Curley she flaunts herself around the ranch in inappropriate clothing she had full rouged lipsShe wore a cotton housedress and red mules, flirting with ranch hands and is apprised of the effect she has on men. These clothes and her behaviour I hold are designed to provoke interest and attention rather than to invite intimacy. She seems preoccupied with strategies to empty d etection from her husband and manages this by continuously asking of his whereabouts. Have any of you boys seen Curley? Like George, Lenny and later on Candy, Curleys wife has a dream patronage it being one of great contrast to theirs. She has an ambition to work in films coulda been in the movies and worn nice clothes and this is no doubt stemmed from her swear for attention and is linked to her loneliness and insecurities on the ranch as she bitterly resents not being treated as an individual. Men make promises to her he says he was gonna out me in the movies but she appears to lack the intelligence to realise the emptiness of their promises. The perceptions we make of Curleys wife are corrupted from the views of the ranch hands. Because knowledgeableity is her only weapon she is referred to as jailbait and a tart Jesus what a tramp.George has reason to be weary of her presence especially with Lenny around and the incident in Weed. hark to me you crazy bastard Dont you even lo ok at that bitch Curleys wife is first presented to us on page 32 the rectangle of sunshine in the doorway was cut off a girl was standing there looking in Curleys wife has brought darkness purportedly symbolising the potential danger of her character. During the last chapter Steinbeck cleverly attempts to alter our perception of Curleys wife by portraying her in a different light. During chapter five, Lenny has incisively killed one of Slims puppies by clumsily petting it.His tendency to inflict damage through trying to show affection is become much prominent. Steinbeck creates an atmosphere of tragedy and doom in which the reader is aware of Lennys anxiety and rattled the halter chains. Curleys wife enters wearing a ingenious cotton dress and red ostrich feathers and the reader already knows of Lennies attraction the colour red which creates a champion of painful inevitability. Her face is made up and her curls are in place This suggested to me that she has obviously made h erself as seductive as possible.Curleys wife is attracted to Lenny because he has got the better of her husband. I think she has worked out an arrangement to ensure that Lenny and her will be alone without interruption but Lenny is acutely aware of Georges instructions to avoid conversation with her aswell as the consequences of not being able to tend he rabbits. She is desperate to talk to him youre a nice guy, why cant I talk to you? and when acquiring the chance to do so the words pour out of her in her passion for communication although Lenny barely listens. Here she describes her desire to be an actress, her naivete in thinking her old lady had stolen the letter and why she married Curley and not liking him. Yet it is as this point that despite her provocative dress sense and her sensuality we realise that she wants only to talk to Lenny why cant I talk to you? I never talk to nobody. I get horrifying lonely and comfort him when he tells her how he has killed the puppy, dont you worry none. Steinbeck has cleverly created a more passionate portrayal, someone we can feel unselfishness for.At the point where Curleys wife offers for Lenny to stroke her hair feel right round there, feel how soft it is the audience are uncertain as to whether this is an innocent, childish act referring to its texture or that she is knowingly leading Lenny towards a sexual encounter. It is also apparent at this period, of how young she actually is, the act of stroking hair is very harmless and childlike, not what we would expect of her character earlier in the novel. She is likened to a little girl who wants to feel physical contact without sexual trace. When Lenny is petting Curleys wifes hair he proceeds in mussing it up I noticed how she only struggled when she came to this realisation again pointing to her self-image and vanity. Lenny erroneously breaks Curleys wifes neck and is fatally killed. Lenny escapes and we are left with a desciption of the setting of the barn a nd of her, and the meanness and the plannings and the discontent and the hanker for attention were all gone from her face here Steinbeck sums up everything we already know about her but in a way that transforms the way we think about her.Still with flawless skin she appears pretty and simplesweet and young a complete contrast to what is perceived of her in earlier chapters. I think her death could have just as well of been caused by Lennys unthinking roughness as by any decisions of hers that things had gone to far. A shepherd bitch symbolises an entity that Curleys wife will never possess, this being children jumped in among the puppies. Curleys wife is undoubtedly one of the most poignant characters in the novel and one that Steinbeck portrays his feeling for than any other character.

Economic and Political Systems of Cuba Essay

The Economic System in Cuba is known to be communism. Communism can be defined as a scheme of equalizing the social conditions of life. This system considers the termination of inequalities in the possession of property as surface as the distribution of wealth equally to all individuals. Therefore, the way of life to achieve this is by the collectivization of all private property. By extension, collectivization is the process of forming collective communities where property and resources are owned by the community and not individuals.Freedom of expression is also mediated by the state. Communism is a system that usually is unsuccessful however, the only way that communism may be achieved is if every single member of a communist society is in complete agreement with the arrangement which was mentioned above. In early Cuban Political history, in that respect were various communist as well as anarchist organizations for example the Communist company of Cuba which was initiated in the early 1920s by Julio Antonio Mella, Carlos Balino, Jose Marti and Fabio Grobart. It was then later led by both the first secretary and secondary secretary Fidel Castro and Raul Castro respectively. In Cuba, no other political party other than that of the Communist Party of Cuba is allowed to be formed in the fear that a non communist party which will be funded by the United States of America would intervene and claim Cubas independence. In comparison to other ruling communist parties around the world, the communist party in Cuba retains a stricter approach and adherence to the tradition of Marxism Leninism and the traditional Soviet Model. In addition, the Cuban Political System is described as authentic which is based on the unique history of the struggle for equality amongst individuals as well as independence. Cuba is a republic with a centralized socialist system with a structure of the State of Republic of Cuba as follows * National Assembly of great deals Power * Council o f State * Council of Ministers * Provincial and Municipal Governments * Judiciary System

Bag of Bones CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The bordering of the anticipate or, more accurately, the way I received the ringing of the ph whizz was as familiar as the creaks of my chair or the hum of the old IBM Selectric. It go tomed to come from far away at first, then to approach care a whistling train flood tide d make on a crossing. There was n superstarextension in my office or Jos the upstairs phone, an old-fashioned rotary-dial, was on a table in the h all in all between them in what Jo used to call no-military personnels-land. The temperature out there must pret bar been at least cardinal degrees, but the air still felt cool on my skin subsequently the office. I was so oiled with sweat that I looked like a slightly pot-bellied version of the muscle-boys I sometimes saw when I was working out.Hello?Mike? Did I wake you? Were you sleeping? It was Mattie, but a distinguishable one from last night. This one wasnt afraid or even tentative this one conk outed so happy she was almost bubbling oer. It was almost certainly the Mattie who had attracted beam of light Devore. Not sleeping, I said. Writing a modest.Get out I view you were retired.I theory so, too, I said, but perchance I was a teensy-weensy hasty. Whats going on? You sound over the moon.I simply got off the phone with John Storrow Really? How long had I been on the punt floor, eachway? I looked at my wrist and saw nonhing but a pale circle. It was half-past freckles and skin oclock, as we used to say when we were kids my watch was infra in the north bedroom, probably craft in a puddle of water from my overturned night-glass. his age, and that he substructure subpoena the other sonWhoa, I said. You lost me. Go back and slow d avow. She did. Telling the hard news didnt take long (it rarely does) Storrow was culmination up tomorrow. He would land at County Airport and stick to at the Lookout Rock Hotel in Castle View. The dickens of them would spend most of Friday discussing the eggshell. Oh, and he found a lawyer f or you, she said. To go with you to your deposition. I think hes from Lewiston. It all sounded good, but what mattered a lot more than the bare facts was that Mattie had recovered her will to fight. Until this morning (if it was still morning the light coming in the window above the broken air conditioner suggested that if it was, it wouldnt be much longer) I hadnt heartyized how gloomy the young cleaning woman in the red sundress and crystallize w devour-to doe withe sneakers had been. How far down the road to believing she would lose her child. This is great. Im so glad, Mattie. And you did it. If you were here, Id give you the biggest kiss you ever had.He told you you could win, didnt he?Yes.And you believe him.Yes Then her vocalism dropped a little. He wasnt exactly thrilled when I told him Id had you over to dinner last night, though. No, I said. I didnt think he would be.I told him we ate in the yard and he said we only had to be inside together for sixty seconds to start the gossip.Id say hes got an insultingly low opinion of Yankee lovin, I said, but of course hes from New York. She laughed harder than my little joke warranted, I thought. Out of semi-hysterical relief that she now had a couple of protectors? Because the whole subject of sex was a tender one for her just now? Best not to speculate. He didnt paddle me too hard about it, but he made it pass water that he would if we did it again. When this is over, though, Im having you for a real meal. Well nonplus e trulything you like, just the way you like it.Everything you like, just the way you like it. And she was, by God and Sonny Jesus, completely oblivious(predicate) that what she was saying efficacy feature other inwardness I would have bet on it. I closed my eyes for a mo custodyt, smiling. Why not smile? Everything she was saying sounded absolutely great, especially once you cleared the confines of Michael Noonans dirty mind. It sounded like we capacity have the expected fairy-tale en ding, if we could keep our courage and persuade our course. And if I could restrain myself from do a pass at a girl young enough to be my daughter . . . outside of my dreams, that was. If I couldnt, I probably deserved whatever I got. that Kyra wouldnt. She was the hood ornament in all this, doomed to go wherever the car took her. If I got any of the wrong ideas, Id do well to remember that.If the judge sends Devore home empty-handed, Ill take you out to Renoir Nights in Portland and buy you nine courses of French chow, I said. Storrow, too. Ill even take shape for the legal beagle Im dating on Friday. So whos better than me, huh?No one I get by, she said, sounding serious. Ill pay you back for this, Mike. Im down now, but I wont endlessly be down. If it takes me the rest of my life, Ill pay you back.Mattie, you dont have to I do, she said with quiet vehemence. I do. And I have to do something else today, too.Whats that? I fuckd hearing her sound the way she did this morning so happy and free, like a prisoner who has just been pardoned and let out of jail but already I was face longingly at the door to my office. I couldnt do much more today, Id end up baked like an apple if I tried, but I requiremented another summon or two, at least. Do what you indispensableness, both women had said in my dreams. Do what you hope.I have to buy Kyra the big teddybear they have at the Castle Rock Wal-Mart, she said. Ill tell her its for being a good girl because I cant tell her its for walking in the in-between of the road when you were coming the other way.Just not a black one, I said. The words were out of my mouth before I knew they were even in my head.Huh? Sounding floor and doubtful.I said bring me back one, I said, the words once again out and down the wire before I even knew they were there. maybe I will, she said, sounding amused. Then her tone grew serious again. And if I said anything last night that made you unhappy, even for a minute, Im sorry. I never for the orb Dont worry, I said. Im not unhappy. A little confused, thats all. In fact Id pretty much forgotten about Jos mystery date. A lie, but in what seemed to me to be a good cause.Thats probably for the best. I wont keep you go on back to work. Its what you want to do, isnt it?I was startled. What makes you say that?I dont manage, I just . . . She stopped. And I suddenly knew two things What she had been about to say, and that she wouldnt say it. I dreamed about you last night. I dreamed about us together. were going to make love and one of us said Do what you want. Or maybe, I dont know, maybe we both said it.Perhaps sometimes ghosts were alive minds and desires divorced from their bodies, unlocked impulses locomote unseen. Ghosts from the id, spooks from low places.Mattie? Still there?Sure, you bet. Do you want me to stay in touch? Or will you hear all you want from John Storrow? If you dont stay in touch, Ill be pissed at you. Royally. She laughed. I will, then . further not when youre working. Goodbye, Mike. And thanks again. So much.I told her goodbye, then stood there for a moment looking at at the old fashioned Bakelite phone handset after she had hung up. Shed call and keep me updated, but not when I was working. How would she know when that was? She just would. As Id cognize last night that she was lying when she said Jo and the man with the elbow patches on the sleeves of his sportcoat had walked off toward the parking lot. Mattie had been wearing a pair of white shorts and a halter top when she called me, no dress or skirt required today because it was Wednesday and the library was closed on Wednesday. You dont know any of that. Youre just making it up.But I wasnt. If Id been making it up, I probably would have put her in something a little more suggestive a Merry widow woman from Victorias Secret, perhaps. That thought called up another. Do what you want, they had said. Both of them. Do what you want. And that was a guide I kne w. While on Key Largo Id read an Atlantic periodic essay on pornography by some feminist. I wasnt sure which one, only that it hadnt been Naomi Wolf or Camille Paglia. This woman had been of the conservative stripe, and she had used that phrase. Sally Tisdale, maybe? Or was my mind just hearing echo-distortions of Sara Tidwell? Whoever it had been, shed claimed that do what I want was the basis of erotica which appealed to women and do what you want was the basis of pornography which appealed to men. Women imagine speaking the former line in sexual situations men imagine having the latter line spoken to them. And, the writer went on, when real-world sex goes bad sometimes turning violent, sometimes shaming, sometimes just unsuccessful from the female partners point of view porn is often the unindicted co-conspirator. The man is apt to round on the woman angrily and cry, You wanted me to Quit lying and admit it You wanted me toThe writer claimed it was what every man hoped to hear in the bedroom Do what you want. Bite me, sodomize me, lick between my toes, drink wine-colored out of my navel, give me a hairbrush and raise your ass for me to paddle, it doesnt matter. Do what you want. The door is closed and we are here, but unfeignedly only you are here, I am just a willing extension of your fantasies and only you are here. I have no wants of my own, no needs of my own, no taboos. Do what you want to this shadow, this fantasy, this ghost.Id thought the essayist at least fifty per cent full of shit the assumption that a man can find real sexual amusement only by turning a woman into a kind of jackoff accessory says more about the observer than the participants. This lady had had a lot of camber and a fair amount of wit, but underneath she was only saying what Somerset Maugham, Jos old favorite, had had Sadie Thompson say in Rain, a story written 80 years before men are pigs, filthy, dirty pigs, all of them. But we are not pigs, as a rule, not beasts, or at least not unless we are pushed to the final extremity. And if we are pushed to it, the issue is rarely sex its usually territory. Ive heard feminists argue that to men sex and territory are interchangeable, and that is very far from the truth.I padded back to the office, opened the door, and behind me the telephone rang again. And here was another familiar sensation, back for a return visit after four years that anger at the telephone, the urge to simply rip it out of the wall and fire it across the room. Why did the whole world have to call duration I was writing? Why couldnt they just . . . well. . let me do what I wanted?I gave a doubtful laugh and returned to the phone, beholding the wet handprint on it from my last call.Hello?I said to stay visible while you were with her.Good morning to you, too, Lawyer Storrow. You must be in another time-zone up there, chum. Ive got one-fifteen down here in New York.I had dinner with her, I said. Outside. Its true that I read the little kid a story and helped put her to bed, but I imagine half the town thinks youre bopping each others brains out by now, and the other half will think it if I have to show up for her in court. But he didnt sound really angry I thought he sounded as though he was having a happy-face day.Can they make you tell whos paying for your services? I asked. At the custody hearing, I mean?Nope. At my deposition on Friday?Christ, no. Durgin would lose all credibility as guardian ad litem if he went in that direction. Also, they have reasons to steer clear of the sex angle. Their focus is on Mattie as neglectful and perhaps abusive. Proving that Mom isnt a nun quit working around the time Kramer vs. Kramer came out in the movie theaters. Nor is that the only problem they have with the issue. He now sounded positively gleeful. Tell me.Max Devore is eighty-five and divorced. Twice divorced, in point of fact. Before awarding custody to a single man of his age, secondary custody has to be taken into consi deration. It is, in fact, the single most important issue, other than the allegations of abuse and neglect levelled at the get under ones skin. What are those allegations? Do you know? No. Mattie doesnt either, because theyre fabrications. Shes a sweetie, by the way Yeah, she is. and I think shes going to make a great witness. I cant wait to meet her in person. Meantime, dont digress me. Were talking about secondary custody, right?Right.Devore has a daughter who has been declared mentally incompetent and lives in an institution somewhere in California Modesto, I think. Not a good bet for custody. It wouldnt seem so.The son, Roger, is . . . I heard a faint fluttering of notebook pages. . . . fifty-four. So hes not exactly a spring chicken, either. Still, there are lots of guys who become daddies at that age nowadays its a brave new world. But Roger is a homosexual.I thought of Bill Dean saying, Rump-wrangler. Under booth theres a lot of that going around out them in California.I thought you said sex doesnt matter.Maybe I should have said hetero sex doesnt matter. In certain states California is one of them homo sex doesnt matter, either . . . or not as much. But this case isnt going to be adjudicated in California. Its going to be adjudicated in Maine, where folks are less enlightened about how well two married men married to each other, I mean can raise a little girl.Roger Devore is married? Okay. I admit it. I now felt a certain horrified glee myself. I was ashamed of it Roger Devore was just a guy living his life, and he might not have had much or anything to do with his elderly dads current enterprise but I felt it just the same.He and a software designer named Morris Ridding tied the knot in 1996, John said. I found that on the first computer sweep. And if this does wind up in court, I intend to make as much of it as I possibly can. I dont know how much that will be at this point its impossible to predict but if I get a chance to paint a picture of that bright-eyed, cheerful little girl parenting up with two elderly gays who probably spend most of their lives in computer chat-rooms speculating about what Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock might have done after the lights were out in officers country . . . well, if I get that chance, Ill take it.It seems a little mean, I said. I heard myself speaking in the tone of a man who wants to be dissuaded, perhaps even laughed at, but that didnt happen.Of course its mean. It feels like sheer up onto the sidewalk to knock over a couple of innocent bystanders. Roger Devore and Morris Ridding dont deal drugs, traffic in little boys, or rob old ladies. But this is custody, and custody does an even better job than divorce of turning human beings into insects. This one isnt as bad as it could be, but its bad enough because its so naked. Max Devore came up there to his old hometown for one reason and one reason only to buy a kid. That makes me mad.I grinned, imagining a lawyer who looked like El mer Fudd standing outside of a rabbit-hole marked DEVORE with a shotgun. My message to Devore is going to be very simple the price of the kid just went up. Probably to a figure higher than even he can afford. If it goes to court youve said that a couple of times now. Do you think theres a chance Devore might just drop it and go away?A pretty good one, yeah. Id say an excellent one if he wasnt old and used to getting his own way. Theres also the question of whether or not hes still sharp enough to know where his best interest lies. Ill try for a meeting with him and his lawyer while Im up there, but so far I havent managed to get past his secretary.Rogette Whitmore? No, I think shes a step further up the ladder. I havent talked to her yet, either. But I will.Try either Richard Osgood or George Footman, I said. Either of them may be able to put you in touch with Devore or Devores chief counsel.Ill want to talk to the Whitmore woman in any case. Men like Devore tend to grow more and more dependent on their close advisors as they grow older, and she could be a key to getting him to let this go. She could also be a headache for us. She might urge him to fight, possibly because she really thinks he can win and possibly because she wants to watch the fur fly. Also, she might marry him.Marry him?Why not? He could have her sign a pre-nup I could no more introduce that in court than his lawyers could go fishing for who hired Matties lawyer and it would strengthen his chances.John, Ive seen the woman. Shes got to be seventy herself. But shes a potential female fraud in a custody case involving a little girl, and shes a layer between old man Devore and the married gay couple. We just need to keep it in mind.Okay. I looked at the office door again, but not so longingly. There comes a point when youre done for the day whether you want to be or not, and I thought I had reached that point. Perhaps in the evening . . .The lawyer I got for you is named Romeo Bissonette. He paus ed. Can that be a real name?Is he from Lewiston?Yes, how did you know?Because in Maine, especially around Lewiston, that can be a real name. Am I supposed to go see him? I didnt want to go see him. It was fifty miles to Lewiston over two-lane roads which would now be crawling with campers and Winnebagos. What I wanted was to go smooth and then take a long nap. A long dreamless nap.You dont need to. Call him and talk to him a little. Hes only a safety net, really hell object if the questioning leaves the incident on the morning of July Fourth. About that incident you tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Got it?Yes.Talk to him before, then meet him on Friday at . . . wait . . . its right here . . . The notebook pages fluttered again. Meet him at the Route 120 Diner at nine-fifteen. Coffee. Talk a little, get to know each other, maybe flip for the check. Ill be with Mattie, getting as much as I can. We may want to hire a private dick.I love it when you talk di rty.Uh-huh. Im going to see that bills go to your guy Goldacre. Hell send them to your agent, and your agent can No, I said. Instruct Goldacre to send them directly here. Harolds a Judaic mother. How much is this going to cost me?Seventy-five thousand dollars, minimum, he said with no hesitation at all. With no apology in his voice, either.Dont tell Mattie. only right. Are you having any fun yet, Mike? You know, I sort of am, I said thoughtfully. For seventy-five grand, you should. We said our goodbyes and John hung up.As I put my own phone back into its cradle, it occurred to me that I had lived more in the last five days than I had in the last four years. This time the phone didnt ring and I made it all the way back into the office, but I knew I was definitely done for the day. I sat down at the IBM, hit the RETURN key a couple of times, and was beginning to write myself a next-note at the bottom of the page Id been working on when the phone interrupted me. What a sour little dooda d the telephone is, and what little good news we get from it Today had been an exception, though, and I thought I could sign off with a grin. I was working, after all working. Part of me still marvelled that I was sitting here at all, breathing easily, my heart beating steadily in my chest, and not even a glimmer of an anxiety attack on my personal event horizon. I wroteNEXT Drake to Raiford. Stops on the way at vegetable stand to talk to the guy who runs it, old source, needs a good & colorful name. Straw hat. Disneyworld tee-shirt. They talk about Shackleford.I turned the roller until the IBM spat this page out, stuck it on top of the manuscript, and jotted a final note to myself Call Ted Rosencrief about Raiford. Rosencrief was a retired Navy man who lived in Derry. I had employed him as a research assistant on several books, using him on one project to find out how paper was made, what the migratory habits of certain common birds were for another, a little bit about the archite cture of pyramid burial rooms for a third. And its always a little bit I want, never the whole anathemize thing. As a writer, my motto has always been dont confuse me with the facts. The Arthur Hailey type of fiction is beyond me I cant read it, let alone write it. I want to know just enough so I can lie colorfully. Rosie knew that, and we had always worked well together. This time I needed to know a little bit about Floridas Raiford Prison, and what the deathhouse down there is really like. I also needed a little bit on the psychology of serial killers. I thought Rosie would probably be glad to hear from me . . . almost as glad as I was to finally have something to call him about.I picked up the eight double-spaced pages I had written and fanned through them, still amazed at their existence. Had an old IBM typewriter and a Courier type-ball been the secret all on? That was certainly how it seemed. What had come out was also amazing. Id had ideas during my four-year sabbatical ther e had been no writers block in that regard. One had been really great, the sort of thing which certainly would have become a novel if Id still been able to write novels. Half a dozen to a dozen were of the sort Id classify pretty good, meaning theyd do in a pinch . . . or if they happened to unexpectedly grow tall and mysterious overnight, like Jacks beanstalk. Sometimes they do. Most were glimmers, little what-ifs that came and went like guesswork stars while I was driving or walking or just lying in bed at night and waiting to go to sleep. The Red-Shirt while was a what-if. One day I saw a man in a bright red shirt washing the show windows of the JC Penney repositing in Derry this was not long before Penneys moved out to the mall. A young man and woman walked under his ladder . . . very bad luck, tally to the old superstition. These two didnt know where they were walking, though they were holding hands, drinking deeply of each others eyes, as completely in love as any two twe nty-year-olds in the history of the world. The man was tall, and as I watched, the top of his head came within an ace of clipping the window-washers feet. If that had happened, the whole works might have kaput(p) over. The entire incident was history in five seconds. Writing The Red-Shirt Man took five months. Except in truth, the entire book was done in a what-if second. I imagined a collision instead of a near-miss. Everything else followed from there. The writing was just secretarial. The idea I was currently working on wasnt one of Mikes Really coarse Ideas (Jos voice carefully made the capitals), but it wasnt a what-if, either. Nor was it much like my old gothic suspense yarns V. C. Andrews with a prick was nowhere in heap this time. But it felt solid, like the real thing, and this morning it had come out as naturally as a breath.Andy Drake was a private investigator in Key Largo. He was forty years old, divorced, the father of a three-year-old girl. At the open he was in the Key West home of a woman named Regina Whiting. Mrs. Whiting also had a little girl, hers five years old. Mrs. Whiting was married to an extremely rich developer who did not know what Andy Drake knew that until 1992, Regina Taylor Whiting had been Tiffany Taylor, a pricey Miami call-girl.That much I had written before the phone started ringing. Here is what I knew beyond that point, the secretarial work Id do over the next several weeks, expect that my marvellously recovered ability to work held upOne day when Karen Whiting was three, the phone had rung while she and her mother were sitting in the patio hot tub. Regina thought of asking the yard-guy to answer it, then decided to get it herself-their regular man was out with the flu, and she didnt feel comfortable about asking a stranger for a favor. Cautioning her daughter to sit still, Regina hopped out to answer the phone. When Karen put up a hand to keep from being splashed as her mother left the tub, she dropped the doll she h ad been bathing. When she bent to pick it up, her hair became caught in one of the hot tubs powerful intakes. (It was reading of a fatal fortuity like this that had primitively kicked the story off in my mind two or three years before.)The yard-man, some no-name in a khaki shirt sent over by a day-labor outfit, saw what was happening. He raced across the lawn, dove headfirst into the tub, and yanked the child from the bottom, leaving hair and a good chunk of scalp back up the jet when he did. Hed give her artificial respiration until she began to breathe again. (This would be a wonderful, suspenseful scene, and I couldnt wait to write it.) He would refuse all of the hysterical, relieved mothers offers of recompense, although hed finally give her an address so that her husband could talk to him. Only both the address and his name, John Sanborn, would turn out to be a fake. Two years later the ex-hooker with the respectable second life sees the man who saved her child on the front p age of the Miami paper. His name is given as John Shackleford and he has been arrested for the rape-murder of a nine-year-old girl. And, the article goes on, he is suspected in over forty other murders, more of the victims children. Have you caught Baseball Cap? one of the reporters would yell at the press conference. Is John Shackleford Baseball Cap?Well, I said, going downstairs, they sure think he is.I could hear too many boats out on the lake this afternoon to make nude bathing an option. I pulled on my suit, slung a towel over my shoulders, and started down the path the one which had been line with glowing paper lanterns in my dream to wash off the sweat of my nightmares and my unexpected mornings labors. There are twenty-three railroad-tie steps between Sara and the lake. I had kaput(p) down only four or five before the enormity of what had just happened hit me. My mouth began to tremble. The colors of the trees and the sky mixed together as my eyes teared up. A sound bega n to come out of me a kind of muffled groaning. The strength ran out of my legs and I sat down hard on a railroad tie. For a moment I thought it was over, mostly just a false alarm, and then I began to cry. I stuffed one end of the towel in my mouth during the worst of it, afraid that if the boaters on the lake heard the sounds coming out of me, theyd think someone up here was being murdered.I cried in grief for the empty years I had spent without Jo, without friends, and without my work. I cried in gratitude because those work-less years seemed to be over. It was too early to tell for sure one swallow doesnt make a summer and eight pages of hard copy dont make a career resuscitation but I thought it really might be so.And I cried out of fear, as well, as we do when some awful experience is finally over or when some terrible accident has been narrowly averted. I cried because I suddenly realized that I had been walking a white line ever since Jo died, walking straight down the mi ddle of the road. By some miracle, I had been carried out of harms way. I had no idea who had done the carrying, but that was all right it was a question that could wait for another day.I cried it all out of me. Then I went on down to the lake and waded in. The cool water felt more than good on my overheated be it felt like a resurrection.

Hunger games Essay

Over the long hot summer I read an interesting book written by Suzanne Collins called The Hunger Games. It is an inspirational book nearly a small district in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem in North America. The Hunger Games is an annual lottery in which one son and one girl aged 1218 from each of the twelve districts are selected to compete in a live televised battle to the death. This is an underdog story of Katniss Everdeen who is from district 12 a coal-mining district that is the poorest and least populated district. She is able to come out victorious and find her love Peeta Mellark who is also from district 12. This story shows slew our age that even through adversity if you work hard enough you can do anything you want to.Katniss faced much adversity in her career from her father dying in a mine accident, her having to find food so her and her sister did non starve, and her taking the come forth of her sister when she is picked to take place in the hunger games. Th is relates to a lot of people because we face challenges in everyday life, but like Katniss we must be able to overcome these challenges and chance upon the best of it. Katniss also showed a lot of bravery by taking the places of her sister in The Hunger Games this act of bravery is something that many people would not do. If you want to be brave in your life you must be able to sacrifice yourself for another person this is another land why I rely this book related to so many people.I personally enjoyed this underdog story. The fact that the least likely winner of the games came out the winner makes the story bang-up to me. I admire the bravery of Katniss for putting her life in danger to save her sister who I believe would have not survived the games. Another reason I like this book is because of the action and the fact that you must erase someone that might be your friend. It shows the desperation of people and how they fight to survive. As I read the book my opinion of Peeta change by at first I thought he said he loved Katniss in the rootage to add publicity and to get Katniss to trust him, and then he would kill her. I was wrong and it turns out that he did love her and they would both win the games because they refused to killeach other. This proves that you cannot judge some by there words but by there actions. In conclusion The Hunger Games is a book about love, bravery, and trust. With out theses Katniss and Peeta would not have been able to survive. It is also a story of how underdogs can win no matter what the chances are. It is an inspirational story that I believe everyone should get the chances to read. These are the reasons why I enjoyed and would recommended this book to people my age.

Pregnancy with Gestational Diabetes Essay

gestational diabetes is a condition characterized by high argument kale (glucose) levels that is first recognized during gestation. The condition occurs in well-nigh 4% of all pregnancies. What Causes Gestational Diabetes in gestationAlmost all women postulate some degree of impaired glucose intolerance as a go absent of hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy. That means that their blood peag may be higher than normal, but not high enough to have diabetes. During the later grammatical constituent of pregnancy (the third trimester), these hormonal changes place pregnant woman at jeopardize for gestational diabetes. During pregnancy, increased levels of certain hormones made in the placenta (the organ that connects the bodge by the umbilical cord to the uterus) help shift nutrients from the nonplus to the developing fetus. Other hormones are produced by the placenta to help prevent the mother from developing belittled blood borecole. They work by resisting the actions of insulin. Over the course of the pregnancy, these hormones lead to progressive impaired glucose intolerance (higher blood carbohydrate levels). To try to decrease blood sugar levels, the body makes more than insulin to get glucose into cells to be used for energy. unremarkably the mothers pancreas is able to produce more insulin (about three times the normal amount) to get the best the effect of the pregnancy hormones on blood sugar levels. If, however, the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin to overcome the effect of the increased hormones during pregnancy, blood sugar levels leave rise, resulting in gestational diabetes.Complications of Gestational DiabetesDiabetes can affect the developing fetus throughout the pregnancy. In early pregnancy, a mothers diabetes can result in birth defects and an increased rate of miscarriage. Many of the birth defects that occur affect major organs such as the brain and heart. During the second and third trimester, a mothers diabetes ca n lead to over-nutrition and excess growth of the baby. Having a large baby increases risks during labor and saving. For example, large babies often require caesarean deliveries and if he or she is delivered vaginally, they are at increased risk for trauma to their shoulder. In addition, when fetal over-nutrition occurs and hyperinsulinemiaresults, the babys blood sugar can drop very start aft(prenominal) birth, since it wont be receiving the high blood sugar from the mother. However, with proper treatment, you can deliver a healthy baby despite having diabetes.Risks for Gestational DiabetesThe following factors increase the risk of developing gestational diabetes during pregnancy Being overweight prior to becoming pregnant (if you are 20% or more over your ideal body weight) Being a member of a high risk ethnic group (Hispanic, Black, Native American, or Asian) Having sugar in your urineImpaired glucose tolerance or impaired fasting glucose (blood sugar levels are high, but not high enough to be diabetes) Family history of diabetes (if your parents or siblings have diabetes Previously giving birth to a baby over 9 poundsPreviously giving birth to a stillborn babyHaving gestational diabetes with a previous pregnancyHaving too much amniotic fluid (a condition called polyhydramnios) Many women who develop gestational diabetes have no known risk factors. Gestational Diabetes DiagnosedHigh risk women should be screened for gestational diabetes as early as possible during their pregnancies. All other women will be screened between the twenty-fourth and 28th week of pregnancy. To screen for gestational diabetes, you will take a running play called the oral glucose tolerance test. This test involves quickly drinking a sweet-smelling liquid, which contains 50g of sugar. The body absorbs this sugar rapidly, causing blood sugar levels to rise within 30-60 minutes. A blood sample will be taken from a nervure in your arm 1 hour after drinking the solution. The blood test measures how the sugar solution was metabolized (processed by the body). A blood sugar level greater than or equal to 140mg/dL is recognized as abnormal. If your results are abnormal based on the oral glucose tolerance test, another test will be given after fasting for several hours. In women at high risk of developing gestational diabetes, a normal screening test result is followed up with another screening test at 24-28 weeks for confirmation of the diagnosis.Gestational diabetes is managed byMonitoring blood sugar levels four times per twenty-four hours forward breakfast and 2 hours after meals. Monitoring blood sugar before all meals may also become necessary. Monitoring urine for ketones, an cutting that indicates your diabetes is not under control. Following specific dietary guidelines as instructed by your doctor. Youll be asked to distribute your calories evenly throughout the sidereal day. Exercising after obtaining your health like providers permission.Monitorin g weight gain.Taking insulin, if necessary. Insulin is currently the only diabetes medication used during pregnancy.Controlling high blood pressure.Monitor Sugar Levels interrogation your blood sugar at certain times of the day will help determine if your act upon and eating patterns are salvageing your blood sugar levels in control, or if you subscribe extra insulin to protect your developing baby. Your health care provider will ask you to maintain a daily forage record and ask you to record your home sugar levels. Testing your blood sugar involves pricking your finger with a lancet device (a small, sharp needle), lay a drop of blood on a test strip, using a blood sugar meter to display your results, recording the results in a log book, and then disposing the lancet and strips properly (in a sharps container or a hard plastic container, such as a laundry detergent bottle). communicate your blood sugar readings with you to your medical appointments so your health care provider can evaluate how well your blood sugar levels are controlled and determine if changes need to be made to your treatment plan. Your health care provider will show you how to use a glucose meter. He or she can also notify you where to get a meter. You may be able to borrow it from your hospital, as many hospitals have loaner meter programs for women with gestational diabetes. The goal of monitoring is to keep your blood sugar as close to normal as possible. The ranges include Time of TestTarget Blood Sugar ReadingBefore breakfastplasma below 105 strong blood below 952 Hours After Mealsplasma below 130 whole blood below 120 Insulin treatment is started if above levels are not maintained.Insulin forGestational DiabetesBased on your blood sugar monitoring results, your health care provider will tell you if you need to take insulin in the take a leak of injections during pregnancy. Insulin is a hormone that controls blood sugar. If insulin is prescribed for you, you may be taught how to perform the insulin injection procedure. As your pregnancy progresses, the placenta will make more pregnancy hormones and larger doses of insulin may be needed to control your blood sugar. Your health care provider will adjust your insulin dosage based on your blood sugar log. When using insulin, a low blood glucose reaction, or hypoglycemia can occur if you do not eat enough food, edit a meal, do not eat at the proper(a) time of day, or if you exercise more than usual.Symptoms of hypoglycemia includeConfusion, Dizziness, Feeling shaky, Headaches, Sudden hunger, Sweating, WeaknessHypoglycemia is a serious problem that needs to be treated right away. If you think you are having a low blood sugar reaction, check your blood sugar. If your blood sugar is less than 60 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter), eat a sugar-containing food, such as 1/2 cup of orange or orchard apple tree juice 1 cup of skim milk 4-6 pieces of hard candy (not sugar-free) 1/2 cup regular soft drink or 1 tablespoo n of honey, brown sugar, or corn syrup. Fifteen minutes after eating one of the foods listed above, check your blood sugar. If it is still less than 60 mg/dL, eat another one of the food choices above. If it is more than 45 minutes until your next meal, eat a bread and protein source to prevent another reaction. write down all low blood sugar reactions in your log book, including the date, time of day the reaction occurred and how you treated it.Diet Change with Gestational DiabetesIf you have gestational diabetes, follow these eating tips course three small meals and cardinal or three snacks at regular times every day. Do not skip meals or snacks. Carbohydrates should be 40%-45% of the total calories with breakfast and a bedtime snack containing 15-30 grams of carbohydrates. If you have morning sickness, eat 1-2 servings of crackers, cereal, or pretzels before getting out of bed. Eat small, frequent mealsthroughout the day and avoid fatty, fried, and greasy foods. If you take ins ulin and have morning sickness, make sure you know how to treat low blood sugar. aim foods high in fiber such as whole-grain breads, cereals, pasta, rice, fruits, and vegetables. All pregnant women should eat 20-35 grams of fiber a day. Fats should be less than 40% of calories with less than 10% consumed being from saturated fats. Drink at least 8 cups (or 64 ounces) of liquids per day.Make sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals in your daily diet. investigate your health care provider about taking a prenatal vitamin and mineral supplement to meet the nutritional needs of your pregnancy. Regular exercise during pregnancy can improve your posture and decrease some common discomforts such as backaches and fatigue. Being fit during pregnancy means safe, mild to moderate exercise at least three times a week. But, regardless of gestational diabetes, every pregnant woman should consult with her health care provider before beginning an exercise program. He or she can give you p ersonal exercise guidelines, based on your medical history. Since both insulin and exercise lower blood sugar, you should follow these additional exercise guidelines to avoid a low blood glucose reaction Always carry some form of sugar with you when exercising, such as glucose tablets or hard candy. Eat one serving of fruit or the equivalent of 15 grams of carbohydrate for most activities lasting 30 minutes. If you exercise right after a meal, eat this snack after exercise. If you exercise 2 hours or more after a meal, eat the snack before exercise.Pregnancy Weight GainThe recommended amount of weight gain during pregnancy depends on your pre-pregnancy weight, whether there is more than one fetus, and the trimester. Typically more weight gain is judge during the second and third trimester and recommended intakes of calories should increase at that time. Gaining the right amount of weight during pregnancy by eating a healthy, balanced diet is a ethical sign that your baby is gettin g all the nutrients he or she needs and is growing at a healthy rate. It is not necessary to eat for two during pregnancy. Its true that you need extra calories from nutrient-rich foods to help your baby grow, but you generallyneed to consume only 200 to 300 more calories per day than you did before you became pregnant to meet the needs of your growing baby. Ask your health care provider how much weight you should gain during pregnancy. A woman of reasonable weight before pregnancy can expect to gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. You may need to gain more or less weight, depending on what your doctor recommends. In general, you should gain about 2-4 pounds during your first 3 months of pregnancy and 1 pound a week for the remainder of your pregnancy.Where the weight goesBaby8 poundsPlacenta2-3 poundsAmniotic fluid2-3 pounds thorax tissue2-3 poundsBlood supply4 poundsFat stores for delivery and breastfeeding5-9 poundsUterus increase2-5 poundsTotal25 to 35 poundsBaby After Delive ryYour babys blood sugar level will be tested immediately after birth. If the blood sugar is low, he or she will be given sugar water to drink or by an intravenous tube in the vein. Your baby may be sent to a special care nursery for observation during the first few hours after birth to make sure he or she doesnt have a low blood glucose reaction. If you had gestational diabetes, there is an increased risk that your new-sprung(a) will develop jaundice. Jaundice is a yellow discoloration of the skin that occurs when bilirubin is present in the babys blood. Bilirubin is a blusher that causes jaundice and is released when extra red blood cells build up in the blood and cant be processed fast enough. Jaundice goes away rapidly with treatment that often involves exposing your baby to special lights to get rid of the pigment. Gestational diabetes does increase the risk that your child will have diabetes in the future.Usually with gestational diabetes, blood sugar levels return to normal about 6 weeks after childbirth because the placenta, which was producing the extra hormones that caused insulinresistance, is gone. Your doctor will check your blood sugar levels after your baby is born to make sure your blood sugar level has returned to normal. Some doctors recommend an oral glucose tolerance test 6-8 weeks after delivery to check for diabetes. You should also be screened for diabetes in the future. Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 60% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes later-in-life.By maintaining an ideal body weight, following a healthy diet, and exercising, you will be able to reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, women who have gestational diabetes during one pregnancy have a 40%-50% chance of developing diabetes in the next pregnancy. If you had gestational diabetes during one pregnancy and are provision to get pregnant again, talk to your health care provider first so you can make the necessary lifestyle chang es before your next pregnancy. stick by tips on eating right with Diabetes by consulting with a dietician or your primary care physician.SourcesAmerican Diabetes Association Gestational Diabetes. Gone with the Wind

The movie done for(p) with the sophisticate (1939) is considered the most beloved, popular and of everlasting relevance. It has won several Oscar awards in 1939. Produced by David O Selznick, and directed by passkey Fleming, the photographic scene was released a few months after WWII began in Europe. It enabled the American viewers to identify with the war and its theme of survival. It was based on a novel indite by Margaret Mitchell about well-bred war and reconstruction in America. Producer, David O Selznick had obtained the movie right to Mitchells novel in 1936 for $50,000. The renowned cinema was guessing in Technicolor which was used very rarely in those times. The historical classic movie of the Old South during civil war period boasts of an eternal moulding in a timeless, classic tale of love-hate romance. The movie covers the various romantic pursuits of the resolute heroine Scarlett OHara, against the background of historical events. Ashley, the man she loves marrie s her cousin, Melanine. She finds it difficult to find love during the civil war years and is forced to seek shelter for herself and her family in the plantation Tara. She defends it against union soldiers, carpetbaggers and even against starvation. Scarlet marries Rhett Butler but the marriage fails due to her flatness towards him. She again returns to Tara.CinematographyCinematography is the art of making camera and lighting choices when recording photographic images for the cinema.Technio colour was not widely used when the read Gone with the horn in was being filmed. Moreover, it carried several disadvantages. Selznick borrowed all the seven heavy, cumbersome cameras of the Technicolor Corporation for shooting. Each picture had colour consulant who had the power to reject any colour scheme she tangle was incompatible with colour cinematography. Moreover, the technical advisers, who were supposed to assist the cinematographers, had only worked with black and white film. Techni color required double the amount of lighting for illumination of a scene. Selznick had antecedently worked with technicolour. He knew that it would be very important in giving Gone with the Wind visual richness needed for a classic drama.Actually, Selznick wanted the films colour to have the same impact as the characters emotions. He was so determined in it and went to the extent of dismissing the first cinematographer, Lee Garmes, for choosing a colour scheme which Selznick thought was very much subdued. The next cinematographer, Ernest Haller, was more successful in obtaining more glowing effects. Selznick had realized that shadow formed an important wear out in a scenes visual impact. He asked his colour consultant to shoot Scarlett and her father on the hill at Tara. With the farthestm light brightly in the distance, the ensuing farming effect strongly emphasizes Geralds feeling about the significance of the land.Selznick employs this silhouetting to the similar effect in the films final scene, when Scarlett stands on the same mount as she comes home to Tara. Another use of shadow is to highlight moments that focus on relationship between characters in the film. It is first used in the form of the frightening shadows Melanie and Scarlett cast on the walls of temporary hospital.Later on, delivery of Melanies baby is lighted with silver streams of light. The apparition in the scene renders it more personal and gives it a powerful simplicity. (Fleming, 1939). The use of Matte painting was another technique which Selznick adapted from black and white film to Technicolour. When a shot is filmed, the area to be painted in afterwards is covered with black matte paint on a glass overwhelm positioned in front of the camera.Afterwards, a colour scale illustration of the omitted portion is shot to cover the blacked out area. Clarence Silfer, the special effects cinematographer of Gone with the Wind used the technique to complete a number of sets that were only p artially finished. All, Outhouses, Taras side views, background vegetation, the train station roof, the twelve oak plantation, the decorations in the old armoury, some of the wounded soldiers lying on the ground in long shots, and an entire street of burning houses, were matte paintingsFilm editing redaction is the art of establishing rhythm in film. People often does not notice or acknowledge the contribution of film editor. Major aspects of the editing of a film are created outside the editing room. The director, script writer, and photographer are also involved in editing. One of the responsibilities of the editor is to ensure that intentions of the scriptwriter have correctly been pictured in the film. Hal C. Kern, the film editor of Gone with the Wind, won the Oscar award for film editing. One can clearly observe that smooth flow of events which are portrayed in the film. In this film, there is an outstanding use of color for the enhancement of dramatic mood.Production designP roduction designer is the in charge of the films art department which consists of an art director, prop master, costume designer and a ser decorator. He works in close association with director, and director of photography to produce films feel and look by choosing the right shapes, colours and compositions for each shot. A production designers duties cover far beyond extending support because a movie is eventually a visual medium, its visual material is almost like another character, itself producing a mood and legal transfer out an emotional response from the spectators.Production design involves lot of planning and the production designer should be able to strike a balance between his own creative vision with the films need for authenticity of place and time. Lyle Wheeler, the art director of Gone with the Wind, won an Oscar for his efforts in the movie.Work citedFleming, Victor. Dir. Gone with the Wind, (1939). Selznick I

Analysis of Sonnet 75 (Amoretti) by Edmund Spenser Essay

praise 75 is taken from Edmund Spensers poem Amoretti which was published in 1595. The poem has been fragmented into 89 short sonnets that feature make up the whole of the poem. The consult Amoretti itself means little notes or little cupids. This poem is said to have been written on Spensers come affair and eventual marriage to Elizabeth Boyle, his second wife. sonnet 75 centers on the immortality of spiritual love and the temporality of physical love. In the seventy-fifth sonnet of Amoretti, the decline scheme of three quatrains and a rhyming coup permit is employed. The rhyme scheme is the typical Spenserian sonnet format of the first quatrain creation ABAB, the second being BCBC, the one-third CDCD and the couplet EE. It follows the meter of the iambic pentameter. The first quatrain has a narrative feel to it because of the beginning One day I The second quatrain starts with a dialogue by a female, most probably the beloved. The third quatrain is an answer again in a conv ersation because of the use of quoth I. The couplet at the end gives the conclusion the likes of a fact because it uses the present participle tense. Sonnet 75 is a lyric because it tells of the poets personal experience.Spenser writes this sonnet in the typical Petrarchan style. It is written in the pursuit of a woman whom he loves. The rhyme scheme coincides with the Petrarchan model. The whole sonnet reeks of the use of imagery. The very opening lines, One day I wrote her name upon the strand, But came the waves and washed it away create a vivid image of the sea-side. Other excerpts from the sonnet that produce a visual effect atomic number 18 decay, wiped out, yield in dust, and in the heavens write your glorious name. while the first three evoke negative images, the last one paints a beautiful, fantastical outline in the mind. The short sonnet incorporates beginning rhyme very often, for instance, die in dust, verse your virtue, love shall live, by and by life, etc. The s ounds that have been continuously been employed are /d/, /w/ and /l/. Alliteration throughout is helping form the images. The /w/ sound in waves and washed it away help create an sound impact of the swishing waves. The repetitive /d/ gives an ominous sound and is used for all such words, for example decay, die, expiration, etc. There is also repetition of certain words. visionary appears twice in one line. Then, the concept of mortality is conveyed through mortal, immortalize and eternize. The sonnet is rife with symbolism. The sea alludes to the distance that is between the l everyplace and his beloved which is cause pain to the lover. The writing on the guts refers to the lovers insistence on making a worldly impact on his beloved. The waves are a constant reminder of the cruelty of love, haunting again and again. By washing away the name of the beloved, the waves act as torrents of torture. The sea-side or beach also symbolizes a peaceful, comfortable place where the lover un reservedly expresses himself. The lovers writing on the sand can be a reference to mans inherent desire to eternalize his being to be remembered forever. The waves here signify time. The erasing of the name by water signifies the transient nature of human life. It points towards the futility of mans aspirations for immortality, especially poets who wish to be eternalized through their works. However, irrespective of how many times he may try to make his life meaningful, it is pointless. Everything is transitory and will in the end be subverted. Personification is an important element in the sonnet. The sea or waves are given human qualities. It washed, and made my paynes his petition. Washing and preying or inflicting pain upon mortal are human qualities. The poet has dexterously presented a contrast between the earthly and the celestial ideas and things. While in the first half of the poem, time and nature destroy the poets writing and attempts to immortalize it in the second ha lf the poet immortalizes his eternal, spiritual love through his writings. One of the indirect implications of the typical fifteenth century women being docile and subservient can be found in the waves being given a masculine quality.Normally, nature is associated with the female entity because both are creditworthy for giving and sustaining life. Here, however, the authors reason for giving a masculine identity to nature must be because of the malignant role it is playing. Edmund Spensers Sonnet 75 from Amorreti is not only an exquisite piece of Elizabethan times, it portrays the quintessential poetry of the time as well. His optimal employment of literary techniques of form, rhyme, imagery, personification and alliteration give the sonnet a wholesome structure and an pleasant quality. Theme When he writes her name on the sand, her name is washed away by the waves. He tries again and again but his all attempts when the feed is in will be washed. The lover here emphasize that alleg orically The billow represents the time and The sand of seashore represents his memories The word tide refers to the word time also in means of written and sand also refers to his memories because memory is a reflection of the erstwhile(prenominal) and it has a particular shape in minds to indicate particular moments and events which we experienced. but this shape in time becomes uncertain as the time passed memory skips over some important or trivial details. So everthing can be forgetton, ,n memory there can be nothing everlasting JUST like HER NAME ON THE SAND OF SEASHORE.. the poet has a great longing to immortalize her name. But he deduces that nature wants to explain that love is temporary. Because when he wrote her name the tide washes it away. Then the lady speaks that his effort is in vain he can not change the intrinsic nature of the mortality. She believes every mortal thing will be perished. She is offended by his attempt to immortalize her. But the lover believes when the love becomes immortal her name will be written in heaven. THE AMORETTI.Edmund Spenser Sonnet 75 One day I wrote her name upon the strand, But came the waves and washed it away Again I wrote it with a second hand, But came the tide, and made my air his prey. Vain man, said she, that doest in vain assay A mortal thing so to immortalize, For I myself shall like to this decay, And eek my name be wiped out likewise. non so (quoth I), let baser things devise To die in dust, but you shall live by fame My verse your virtues rare shall eternize, And in the heavens write your glorious name. Where whenas oddment shall all the world subdue, Out love shall live, and later life renew. One day I wrote her name upon the strand This a case of Hyperbaton because the normal launch of wards has been changed . The ordinary syntactic order world have been I wrote her name upon the strand. Again I wrote it with a second hand, But came the tyde , and made my paynes his pray This is a case of Tr ansferred Epithet Hypallage The epithet second properly belongs to time rather than to hand . It may also a case of personification since tide is seen as hunting down the efforts of the poet. For I myself shall like to this decay, And eek my name by urped out likeirse. This is a case of simile . The poet points to the similarity between the destruction of the sculptured name by the sea and the death caused to the lady by time, the similarity is explicitly stated by the use of word like. Not so, quod I, let baser things devize To die in dust but you shall live by fame This is a case of antithesis where two opposed ideas are balanced against each other to the homogeneous effect . The two ideas contrasted are the idea of the meaner things being reduced to dust by time on the one hand, and the idea of the superior beloved transcending this by fame , on the other .Where when as death shall all the world subdew, Our love shall live, and later life renew It is a case of Antithe sis since the two opposed ideas of the death of the world and the living of their love are balanced against each other. This is also a cause of Epigram . Ordinarily the idea of the renewal of love after(prenominal) life may seem absurd, but on thinking more deeply one realizes that their love would indeed be renewed by the later generations of lovers who would model their love on the poets.

In order to make this owner-tenant kindred better and strong, there should be a proper written agreement or a contract between the two parties. Both the parties should eave evidence in writing. In case of any mishap or loss, they could show the written evidence to the respective authorities. Also, the owner should recognize the nature of work of the tenant. He should show some leniency towards his tenant. The fixed amount of money should be less and it should be agreed upon the two parties. The tenant should be happy with the agreed amount as well the owner. Both the parties should be happy with this contract. The race between the two parties can be improved more if the owner affiances the security of the tenant. He should minimize the term of a contract amount. He should understand the problems faced by the tenant. He should support his tenant in every possible way. Finance facilities should be provided to the tenant so that he faces less prob lems in his life. Banks and specialized institutions should provide micro financing facilities to such tenants so that they can enjoy working in their profession. Owners are happy in this relationship but the tenants are not happy. They can remain happy if their financial burden is minimized. So the government should unfeignedly consider this point as the number of tenants are increasing day by day in our country.Case Study no. 2 Relationship between an owner and a female tenant. She also said that the workers working in her roughby are all skilful people and theyve never teased or disturbed her ever. She also said that she wanted to go broad and live there happily as she earned less here in Pakistan. The owner is quite happy with this contract because he gets paid on a fixed amount on daily basis. He earns RSI. 6000 from this agreement in a month. He is satisfied with his tenant because she is an honest working woman. He is very lenient with his tenant. Even if she has not earned much, he agrees to take less amount as well. He is very cooperative. Business Outcomes The owner is happy with this relationship but the tenant is not happy. She faces a lot of financial problems. Her expenses exceed her income. She has to pay for her medical expenses as well. She feed three of her children. She has no one to support in her family. But she is satisfied with her owner because even if she doesnt earn Upton the agreed amount, her owner doesnt state her anything and agrees to take whatever she has earned in a day. Learning Outcomes There should be a written contract between the owner and his tenant. There should be written evidence. The owner should understand the problems of his tenant. Both the parties should agree upon a fixed amount which is accepted by the tenant. There should be no work turn on on the tenant. The tenant has chosen to work in a busy area here she can get more customers. So this could also be a learning point. She did not work near her residential area but she chose to work in a more commercial area in order to get more customers. She hardly manages to pay RSI. 80 as her traveling expense daily so that she can work in an area where she could earn more. Case Study no. 3 The relationship between owner of the asset and his tenant. This case study is about a young tenant who is twenty four years old. His name is Shad ed. He is driving an auto rickshaw on rental basis. He has been into this profession since the last six months. He is Just a starter. When we interviewed him, we came to know that he has come from a very poor background. His parent couldnt afford education for him. Thats why he had no other alternative left and he thought of is into a contract with his owner since the last six months. He lives with his family and is not married yet. Thus he has to take responsibility of his parents and siblings only. Problems faced by the tenant Shaded said that he earns around more than RSI. 8000 in a month. His owner acquires a rent of RSI. 300 daily from him. That meaner he has to pay his owner a total of around RSI. 9000 per month whether he earns or not.The owner leave alone acquire this amount from him at any cost. The tenant also claimed that if he fails to pay him the required amount, his owner wouldnt show any leniency. Rather he might throw him out of this contract. The tenant complained that his earnings were less according to his salary expectations. He doesnt earn much. He has to feed six member of his family and has to look after their wants and needs as well. It is really difficult to even provide two meals per day to his family members. He is surviving in his life from hand to mouth. The tenant protested that his Job is really tough. He works more than ten hours in a day. He also said that there are no fixed timings in this Job. sometimes he has to drive the auto rickshaw day and night. But still he is not happy with his Job. He has to bear all the repairs and maintenance cost of the vehicle as well. He also has to bear all the petrol and gasoline expenses. The owner of the asset is happy and satisfied as long as he is receiving the rent on time. The owner doesnt have any problems with his tenant. He says that his tenants behavior is quite reasoned. His relationship can improve with his tenant only if he gives rent to him on time.If we give a profound insight into this contract, we come to see that the owner is quite happy with this relationship but the tenant is not happy at all. Tenant is earning less according to his expectations. He doesnt have any savings at all. Whatever he earns spends it. Thus we can say that the tenant is not happy with this contract. He is not at all excited when he goes to work. This Job serves as a compulsion for him as he has no other option. The owner of the asset is happy because he is earning good. But the tenant is not happy. The basic learning outcome that comes out be is that the owner should show mom leniency to the tenant. If the tenant cannot pay the required amount to his owner on time due to some problem, the owner shouldnt threaten him that he would fire him from the Job. Instead the owner should understand the problems of the tenant. If the tenant asks for some leniency from his owners side, he should show it. If the tenant cannot pay the required rent or if he earns less in a day, the owner sho uld take whatever he gets from him. He shouldnt argue with his tenant in this matter. The government also shouldnt charge any amount from the rickshaw drivers charges should be borne by the owner himself. There should be a written agreement between the two parties so that they possess some evidence of this contract. Case Study no. 4 The relationship between an owner of the asset and a tenant. This case study revolves around a man named Hosannas who is working as a tenant and drives wagon on rental basis. He is thirty three years old. He has been into this profession from the last two years. His monthly earnings vary from time to time. Sometimes he earn more and sometimes less. He doesnt have a fixed salary. But he said that he earns more than eight thousand rupees in a month. He is a citizen ofLahore and has a house of himself. He is happily married and has one kid. He said that he has only two dependents in his family. He doesnt have much burden on his shoulders as he has to feed on ly two family members. This case study was a bit different and interesting as the tenant was quite satisfied with his Job. He earned well and said that his earnings matched up to his expectations. He has to work for more than ten hours in a day. He also said that his job is tough but he still finds it interesting. He said that this Job is the only source of earnings for him so he has to work with luxuriant interest. He is very excited when he goes to work daily. The only problem he faced in his profession was the toughness of his job. His relationship with his owner is also good. His owner treats him fairly. His owner is happy with him if he pays the rent on time. The tenant is happy sometimes with the way his Job is going. He also manages easily with his current salary. The owner of the asset is satisfied with the tenant. The tenant behaves with him in a very polite manner. They never argue with apiece other. The owner is happy with this Both the owner and the tenant are quite sat isfied with this contract.Their needs and wants are being fulfilled to an extent. They can improvise this relationship even more if they remain in good terms and behave with each other properly. Both the parties should understand each others problems and support in business matters. The owner should remain lenient with his tenant. He should understand his nature of Job and its related problems as well. He shouldnt put a burden on him. He shouldnt be strict with him. He should let his tenant work with ease. This case study order to strengthen this relationship, both the parties should sign a written agreement of this contract.

Infant Observation Essay

For my assignment, I observed at the dayc are program housed inside my church called entry To Learning (2930 Rayford Rd., Spring, TX 77386), a Christian minorcare provider for ages 6-weeks to fourth grade (after school). at that place are currently 185 children enrolled in the GTL program, including after-schoolers. GTL employs approximately 50 people, not including substitute t from each oneers. The teacherstudent ratios are as follows ages 6 weeks to 12 months 41, 12 to 18 months 51, 18 to 24 months 91, 2 social class olds 111, 3 year olds 151, and four year olds 181. All of the teachers must be CPR certified, First Aid certified, and trained in SIDS, shaken nestling syndrome, infant brain development, and child abuse. I was placed in the infant mode with babies 6-weeks to one year. The elbow means was set up well. thither were eight cribs and/or pack-and-plays aligned around the walls of the welcome on with allowed for prosperous movement of teachers and crawler s. In the center of the room was a b honorable, primary color plat mat that the little ones loved rolling around on.There were also bouncers and jumper play toys for the kids to hop inside and have fun with. In one box of the room was the changing table, kitchenette for warming draw and mixing scotch cereal, and refrigerator for storehouse. There was ample storage space in the kitchenette and the entrances were blocked with childproof gates. Each child has a cubby to put their diaper bags in as well as extra toys, blankets, etc. I think that the room was just the right size for the amount of children in the class, and I think that it was set up in a easy way so getting around was simple. The infant room was on a schedule, but the babies are tiny and all on their own schedules at billet, so it was difficult for the teachers to get all of the children doing the homogeneous thing at the same time. For instance, when it was time for lunch, some babies had just blooden asleep. The schedule was fairly naive arrive, breakfast, nap, play, lesson, lunch, nap, play, leave. But like I mentioned, some babies were doing their own thing, napping when they could have been playing or playing when they were suppositional to be eating. Upon asking the teachers nigh the schedule, they all agreed that if everyone is knowing, then the schedule comes second. I think I would agree with their opinions. Although the infant room wasnt strict on scheduling, all of the babies were happy during my observation. None of the children in the infant room were talking much. There was only one shaver (11 months) that could make actual words. He could say Mama and Dada. Pretty basic. The other babies were verbal, definitely able to let you know if they were hungry, wet or tired, just not producing identifiable words. At one point during my time, one baby was in a jumper talking with another baby across the room. They were chatting back and forth and laughing with each other. I wish I c ould have understood what they were saying, because it was so cute. My favorite age in the infant room were 6-9 months because they were so bright-eyed and ready for anything. All of the teachers spoke with cheerful voices and kept their tones light. When they would talk directly to a baby, they wouldnt use baby-talk and instead focused on using the same words over and over over again to teach the baby to remember select words or phrases. For example, when one baby was hungry and started crying, the teacher that fed him kept saying, Lets get your milk.I asked if the babies tended to remember the short words or phrases and she responded that half of the time there was success. When it came to diapering, the changing table was sanitized after each diaper qualifying and new wax paper is laid on the cushion before the next baby is changed. Employees must wear gloves when changing diapers and wash their detainment after finishing. Every few hours, the toys in the infant room are sanit ized. The floor mat is sanitized three times a day, once in the morning, once at lunch, and once in the afternoon. To pr as yett bad health/hygiene, employees are required to wash their hands before handling personal baby items such as food, clothes, pacifiers, etc. If one child has a runny nose and the teacher uses a tissue, she will then have to wash her hands even though her skin never touched the babys runny nose. The teachers in the infant room were constantly washing their hands, just to be safe. When the babies were ready to be fed, the teacher would wash her hands, warm the milk/mix the baby cereal, and either sit in a rocking chair or place the baby in a freshly sanitized high chair to feed them. After the baby was finished, the teacher would wash out the bottles/bowls and sanitize the high chair. Then she would wash her hands again. Each baby was on their own feeding schedule, so running water was a noise I hear constantly throughout the day. When the babies were ready to go to bed, they were placed in a crib designated for them. Each baby was given a blanket provided by the fires during nap time and a pacifier if provided by the parent as well. Some babies slept in 20 minute intervals temporary hookup others slept for an hour depending on their age. Like I mentioned, it is hard to get all of the babies to sleep at the same time, but I was surprised that the ones who would fall asleep stayed asleep while their classmates fussed when hungry or wet. There were a variety of toys for the babies to play with. From dogs that sang songs to maracas for them to shake, each baby had plenty of options. The favorite toys in the room were the ones where the baby could lay down while playing with them, so mobiles and jumpers were the most popular. There were also electric swings to lay the babies in if they werent happy sleeping in their cribs as well as pack-and-plays. When it came to communication between teachers and parents, there were quite a few ways of tra nsferring information. Each baby had a clipboard with their name on it with papers that were sent home with the parents at the end of each day. The slips had time slots when diapers were changed, bottles were drunk, and naps were bespeakn. I liked how easy it was to organize the information and until now keep the parents happy. Notes were often sent in diaper bags for specific inquiries like Can you please put up an extra onesie tomorrow? and of the sort. Overall I think the communication process is very organized and is easy for everyone. My overall opinion of GTL is very high.I had a great time observing and learning about how my church provides care for kids that dont always come on Sundays. The atmosphere of GTL was very confirmatory and everyone seemed genuinely happy to be working there. All of the teachers were friendly with the kids, even when they had to punish them or take something away, and did everything with a kind heart. The room was very clean and the babies were all happy (most of the time). I liked how each baby had their own crib and cubby, and how everyone was so personable. There were a lot of people stopping by the door just to say hi to another teacher, and I liked knowing that all of the employees seemed to get along with each other without too many issues. The director was pleasant and inviting, as well as knowledgeable when it came to procedures, trainings, and employing new team members. I really enjoyed my time at GTL and will definitely go back when I need to gather more information for my Pre-School observation.
