Marcela Duarte Professor Ramirez Government 2306 November 20, 2015 Chicano Rights The Mexican American battle for civil rights has been long and difficult but alas necessary. Can you imagine living in a prejudice environment and as consequence not being able to exercise your rights as a citizen? The past notion of minorities not having the same rights as the anglo majorities is simply absurd. The injustice that Mexican Americans have experienced in the past is undeniably discriminatory. Justice and reasoning played an important part over the years in dismantling such bigotry. A few notable figures, movements, and court cases in Mexican American history that helped pave the way for obtaining civil rights include: George I. Such belief was not entirely accepted but still remains a significant part of his history. Regardless of that, his involvement with education is highly reminiscent because he fought for the liberty to have equal rights in such matter, it should be considered a priority at most. As a professor at the University of Texas, he continued his endeavor of obtaining opportunities for the Mexican American community. Such work had to with desegregating based on language proficiency as well as unfairness in standardized tests. He was a member of many organizations and councils that served for humanitarian prosperity and advancement of the people. As a member of LULAC, he represented their mission to advocate for the betterment in all prosperous matters, including civil rights, for all Latin American people. In the case of Hernandez vs. Texas, which took place in the 1950s, an all white jury sentenced a man of Mexican American descent, named Pete Hernandez to life for murder. His attorney in accordance to LULAC, was assisted by none other than the brilliant civil rights lawyer of the time, Gustavo C. Garcia. The defense team went out of
